In February 2019, ACEP launched a new public safety and health campaign focused on awareness of riding electric scooters safely. With millions of riders now using the popular transportation devices, emergency physicians are treating a rising number of injuries associated with scooter accidents.
Among the common scooter-related injuries are broken arms, deep bruises, neck injuries, and sprained wrists. As documented last year, scooter accidents that require emergency visits to the hospital commonly involve head injuries, fractures, cuts, and bruises. Of these cases, less than five percent involved situations where the rider was wearing a helmet.
In addition to making use of helmets, ACEP-recommended safety tips for scooters include staying alert and aware of road hazards, and maintaining a moderate pace. In addition, scooters are designed for only one rider and, as with any moving vehicle, should never be driven while under the influence of alcohol.
