Adventure racing (AR) involves individuals or teams using a map and compass to reach checkpoints via multiple modes of transportation. An AR course contains multiple legs. Participants complete each leg with at least one mode of transportation, such as hiking, biking, or paddling, among others. Individuals and teams provide their own race equipment.
AR events can last one or multiple days. Sprints take six to eight hours to complete, require minimal training, and usually take place in developed outdoor areas. One-day races last between 12 and 36 hours. They occur in remote locations and go into the night, sleep deprivation and all. Expeditions last two days and contain the most varied environments and disciplines needed to navigate the course.
